This week's Expressive Arts Therapy workshop was about theory and practice. The different modalities used were Arts, Psychodrama and Movement. The participants took part enthusiastically and had a good time with a lot of learning.

A presentation was made on Expressive Arts Therapy, by Magdalene Jeyarathnam, Director of East West Center for Counselling and Training, in Sheth P.T. Mahila College of Arts & Home science, Surat. The presentation that took place on 30th October, was also experiential as the students were taken through various art activities.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY WORKSHOP IN SURAT
East West Center for Counselling and Training conducted An experiential workshop on “Expressive Arts Therapy” on Tuesday, 29th October.
Expressive Arts Therapy involves a combination of the arts for healing,
Expressive Arts Therapy is the practice of using storytelling, singing, instrumental music, movement and dance, drama, and visual arts, all together; in an integrated way, to foster human growth, development, and healing. It is predicated on the assumption that people can heal through use of imagination and the various forms of creative expression and is an inter-modal therapeutic discipline in which the therapist and client may move freely between drawing, dancing, music, drama, poetry, etc. Provided introduction on Expressive Arts Therapy. It allowed the participants to understand the difference between the regular talk therapies and using such creative methods in therapy (Expressive Arts Therapy).All participants will be able to experience and explore the various modalities, visual art, psychodrama, movement etc. The workshop will include presentation, and live examples of using Expressive Arts like collages, art activities, dance movements and psychodrama, also speaks about the inter-relations between the different modalities used.The workshop also allowed us to understand the flow of choosing and using various modalities during sessions and to plan sessions according to the need of the clients.

Information about the workshops
Historically, the expressive arts have been part of ancient healing practices and a bridge between our worlds both inwardly and communally. In this workshop, participants will use the expressive therapies to explore the world of the parts of the Self. How we relate to ourselves, our family and our community depends on the health of our relationship to the inner and outer Self. While learning some history, theory and use of Expressive Arts, including visual art, journaling, movement and theatre, they will also develop tools for managing stress, healing and empowering themselves.
Profile of Jennie Kristel:
Jennie Kristel, MA, CET, RMT is a Certified Expressive Therapist in private practice, Reiki Master and is trained in Playback theatre and other forms of improvisation theatre and personal story telling. She has been collaborating with the East/West Centre for Counseling offering workshops and trainings in using the Expressive arts since 2009. She teaches using expressive arts, theatre games, and improvisation as a way to support people in understanding their deeper stories, resolve conflict and help build community. She co-edited, “Using Art Therapy in Diverse Populations: Crossing Cultures and Abilities” published in 2013.
