15th Annual Conference of Catholic Psychologists India

15th Annual Conference of Catholic Psychologists India

KERALA from 26th to 28th September 2014

“Psychological Aspects of Aging”

Magdalene Jeyarathnam, Director of East West Center for Counselling and Training was cordially invited to be a guest speaker at the 15th Annual Conference of Catholic Psychologists of India, which was being held in Kerala, India. It was held from the 26th to 28th of September 2014.

She conducted two Expressive Arts Therapy workshops with the group that comprised of over 100 Psychologists, who hailed from all over India. She also discussed the benefits of using them with the aging population. The group was enthusiastic about learning the new techniques and shared some personal stories with the entire group while working through the activities.

Expressive arts therapy uses creative processes in therapeutic, rehabilitative, community or educational settings to foster health, communication, and expression; promote the integration of physical, emotional, cognitive and social functioning; enhance self-awareness; facilitate change, including in the relation to personal growth and community development. It can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, and groups.
Expressive Arts therapy is holistic. Its goals are optimum health and well-being, rather than the diagnosis and treatment of disease and dysfunction. Even when expressive arts are used within the settings of traditional medical and psychological treatment, they are used in the service of learning, healing and growth.
